Leadership Moments 1/2012

During a meeting conversation yesterday, I tried to reinforce a leadership principle that I hold dearly. This principle is about looking for "What is right with others and how we are responsible to make others successful as well".

Very often, it is easy for us to find "What is wrong with others!" Few leaders look for "What is right with others." When we go down the path of looking for others faults, trust me, we will find them. This will only reinforce our thinking and IMHO it is a Lose-Lose situation because your thinking will affect your behaviours and responses and this in turn will reinforce the results/outcomes you are get.

My thinking is, when we try hard enough, we will be able to find "What is right with others!" When we look for what is right with others, we will be more grateful, happy and this is a win-win because the other party will also respond accordingly by doing "more right".

Another important part of the principle is "What can we do to make it easy for others to do right than to do wrong?" Yes, we can be responsible to help others to be successful as leaders. Don't always look out the window and point your fingers at others, perhaps at times, we need to look at the mirror and ask ourselves, what have we done to contribute to this situation and what can we do to make it better?

Yes, in order to see the world with this pair of lens, we need to have a very high level of self mastery and awareness. Am I too idealistic and obilvious to what is happening in the real world? In our Singaporean lingo "Where got time!" Our people are paid with good salaries, our vendors are making money out from us, they ought to delivery! If not, we will whack them and get the next better player in.

Well...I see it differently. I may be a dying breed, But that's how I see it!

Do share with me your thinking.

Jim
